perf engine questions.
Okay so Ive got everything bulked up for a motor build on my 318 however its running smoothly still so Im just planning from this moment on until next winter. I was thinking about comp cams xtreme energy (lostpart #) good strong tq cam. idle to 5500rpm basically but I hear the lobes flatten out easily or its not a very long term cam at all. Any body know anything on this. Im also contemplating high flow steel heads or cast as to aluminum. or just head work as it would be much cheaper. and any ideas on pistons. Im shooting or 300-320 hp and 350 tq or so. 1.7's HS RR's will be added as after research I believe it will work fine with that style perf cam and still fit under valve covers. Ill also either do a kegger mod or do an M1 and double roller timing chain, roller lifters etc. already has exhaust size ready headers back and plan to keep my 3.55 for the time being. and i have the mopar pcm but will that work or will I have to get my stock computer flashed by B&G or can i still run stock pcm. Ive done research and have an idea but I would lovefeedback from guys who hve though about or gone through with this. I think getting my 318 upto 320 hp and 350 or more tq would be a screamer but also keeping it realistic and still be a dd when needed. thanks for the input to come.
personally i would buy a newer ram pre 98 and up because of the tuners that is availble for engine mods. if it wasnt for putting a tuner on my truck my truck would be a gutless pig
also 200 and 01 has the si/so cat so its easy to throw a highflow cat on that and call it a day.
i would sell what you have keep the mods you want and start with a 5.9 . you will already have 30 more hp stock
and find a 2001 offroad with the 4.10 gears you will be smoking some ricers !

No reason not to go m1 if you are gonna cam it. I would pick a cam you want, then go with factory sized roller rockers (1.6's). The way 1.7's make their extra power on a stock motor is by adding a bit more lift to the valvetrain, making it act like it has a slightly larger cam. So since you plan to put in an aftermarket cam anyway, no reason to mess with the geometry of it. These guys have the heads you want if you stay cast iron. Edelbrocks would be cool too
If you are going into the bottom end, why not stroke it? It can be done for less than you might think.
Why on earth do you want to leave the 3.55's in there?

Thought about it. ive got a guy set to build it who has a passion for building engines, has had 318 hot rods, and also only charges 30 dollars an hour labor while being one of the best. He has all of the machinery. I might talk to him a bit. and i see the point on the 1.6 ratio ive just seen performance magazines show them using 1.7's still with a larger cam. seems kinda weird why fool the bigger cam when the cam cant be fooled with lol? Thanks for the help guys and i like my 318. 360 makes a small bit more power stock but i like the reliability and durability facts of it vs the bigger brother 5.9. And im already at 7.5 sec 0-60 with out build ing my motor and have 3.55's 5.9's not gonna be a whole lot better. I already make most 350 plus hp truck off the lot with boltons either lose or give them a run for thier money in a lil 17yr old 318. And its still my daily driver. Im just a horsepower hungry guy i guess haha. Ill look into it. stroker might be nice as to easily get more tq and hp with less hard parts and effort. Everything is ready... trans, t case, axles, u joints and drivelines, and front end, as well as the common parts such as shocks and brakes. guess im just trying to jump the gun.
the 3.55's will be changed after i get a fuel friendly rig. im thinking 3.92 or if 4.10's just upgrading and swapping the axles to a heavier duty set up. I have a lot.. a lot of low end power but ablove 55-60 there isint much, i want to improve on that especially. therefore increasing top end as well as the entire rpm range.

and with purchase price, repairs, and body work and paint after accident i have practically 20k invested already. im not selling. im too far in with this truck and i like the 318. Maybe ill get an off pavement toy with a 360 next pickup instead and have a pavement shredder and an offroader.

The lower the gear the more low end youll have. Im looking to do something of the like to my truck but just cam, intake, cai, dual exhaust, headers and hi flow cats.
If i had the money to do it id build it into a 390 stroker

With your overdriven transmission that will not be the case. Back when 1:1 was the norm for high gear 4.10s were a REALLY deep gear, but since you have more options in front of it there's nothing to worry about.
1.Xtreme energy cam XR268HR-10 or slightly more aggresive XR274HR-10
2.8920-16 Roller lifter. (lifters and cam by comp cams)
3.Double roller timing chain
4. Improve heads, (cast hi flow or port polish and clean up existing ones)
5. Harlands sharps 1.6 roller rockers (adjustable)
6. pushrods, pistons, crank probablly let the mechanic get those as hes very knowledgeable on them.
7. m1 intake and mopar valve covers.
8. melling high volume oil pump (25% more flow)
9. already have higher stall converter, headers etc.
10. most likely have a custom pcm flash. if i do ill probablly sell my brand new mopar pcm. only used 3 months.
What could i look at gaining power wise? and ill have to get 4.10's in there down the road for sure. everyones sig seems to be showing those. In fact I could postpone engine since its doing good and get 4.10's installed first.. bulk up the front and back axles. hmm decisions. thanks for the input so far guys
