Transmissions!
alright i am about to buy 2000 Dodge ram 2500 5.9 4x4. i know dodges have horrible transmissions, what should i do, rebuild the transmission? or drop a new one in? any help will be grateful. Thank you.
A transmission isn't broken until it's broken.
Although the Dodge OD transmissions do have a reputation, no company's overdrive transmission is as strong as the non-OD units they're derived from, and every OEM has higher rates of problems with OD units.
Do some preventative maintenance (as suggested above). If it doesn't have a transmission cooler, add one. Maybe add a trans temp gauge, and don't overheat it. Don't tow in OD. That's about it, I think. Run it.
Dodge tranny problems are common, but believe it or not some people don't have any problems.
If you haven't agreed to a price yet, whine about your fear of tranny issues and try to negotiate a lower price. Could actually make you money.

Also test drive for a good amount of time, and make sure it shifts correctly before you buy the truck. Do you know what the truck was used for in it's previous life? And how many miles on it?
Buy it if Its good. I got 270K all original transmission, I think its on its 4th or 5th filter change, and only currently acts bad when its cold.
Oh its also pushing 35" tires with upwards of 400lbs of stuff in the bed....
