Thumbs down transmission doesnt shift once hot!

well its a 1994 dodge 1500 5.9l with the 4speed auto. and the problem started about 3 weeks ago and has only been driven twice since than.

here is the problem, the truck starts up and drives fine and once the transmission gets hot and you stop a stop sign or something it wont go anymore and it acts like its in neutral. the tranny whines and if your lucky slowly creeps in 1st and reverse but than stops after 20ft. i thought it was a tranny overfilled problem after doing some research, but i drained it into the crosshairs and still doing the same thing.

But! while i was draining it i noticed the atf fluid was brown and smelt really burnt. it was also super thin like water while it was hot. is this the main or issue and if so does it also mean that the transmission is toast or could it be salvaged with a tranny fluid and filter change. bc it does drive and seems to drive and shift perfectly when cold. makes it to the freeway no problem and drives on the freeway just fine. but as soon as it comes to a complete stop it starts acting up bad!!. so any help here would be greatly appreciated.

changing the fluid will probably kill it completely. Sad to say, but, I suspect it is rebuild time.

Because all the nasty crap in the fluid is probably what is giving the clutches enough friction to get a grip when cold.... clean fluid won't have the crap, so, not as much friction on the clutches, (which are basically gone anyway....) so, no more moving......

Stop-slip swells clutches/seals/etc, so they might (Note: MIGHT) last a bit longer..... It's a bandaid fix, that may or may not get you some more time out of your trans, but, I wouldn't hold my breath. I don't think you have enough of the clutches left to swell enough to work right...

You getting governor shift solenoid codes??
When it starts doing that

Try shifting neutral for a couple seconds, back to drive a couple seconds
Keep your foot off the gas till the shift is completed.
Do that 4 or 5 times
It helped my transmission till I got the parts fixed
Prevented the truck from dumping to limp mode. Seemed like a quick reset fix on my truck
For the governor shift solenoid.
If your fluid is brown and burnt. Your transmission is literally cooking itself while you drive.

If your due for a rebuild, go performance and forget about doing a rebuild ever again depending on your driving habits

That may not be much of a plus.

I am having this same problem with the transmission in my 93 Dakota 4x4, transmission was completely rebuilt less than a year ago and I replaced the transfer case in the truck back in January luckily the transmission is under warranty so I can update this once I hear back from the shop as to why it is doing this and hopefully that information can help you guys out as well
