98 ram steering issues

Default 98 ram steering issues

hello,

i have a 98 1/2 ton 4wd ram i have alot of play in the steering wheel about 2 inches side to side, i looked and the intermediate shaft and it looks good doesn't shake. the track bar doesn't move its stiff my alignment is good. I replaced my steering gear box. I'm lost.....

What brand gear box did you replace it with?

yeah a reman but it still has the 2inch back and forth since the old one i wouldnt think it would be that.

Thenyou have worn tie rod ends, idler arm and/or pitman arm. Check ball joints also.

You also may want to see this... Fyi.....

the only main thing left is drag/tie rods. check all the joints on them. not sure what kind of steering affect rods would have though. it cant hurt to look.

4wd rams dont have idler arms. just a pitman. and thats splined on so if that was bad, there would be no steering. but it could be the joint on the drag rod thats attatched to the pitman arm, if thats what you mean.

ball joints are new as of last year ill look at the tie rods and drag, if you can move the ends with your hands are they bad?

no, you should be able to move them by hand but there should be some stiff resistance. if you can move around freely with 1 finger than they're probly bad. but if its causing the steering to have that much play then i would think it would be more than no resistance. i would think the joint itself would have alot of play and wobble as you move it around.
