OK, sounds like BJ's and hubs are good. Time to replace the ujoints. Should have NO play, up, down sideways.

Assuming that the u joints may have been installed at the same time (preferred method) and have been driven the same number of miles (unless front shaft on 4wd) I would replace all. Just to know that they are good...

u-joints and bearings DIY-
2 huge cautions - the bearings are very expensive, about $175 each, so if you have good ones, don't bust them during removal.

second - when re-inserting axles into the tubes - treat the axle seals like GLASS, as they are a lot of work to replace.
