Yep, best to use an identical battery. Some auto/camping/boating/electronic stores will have an isolator. Real poplular with fishers on boats. Run cable from alternator to center pole on isolator then a cable to each + terminal on a battery. Might take some planning to completely isolate the starter battery from the other but it shouldnt be too hard.
