Default Gearsss

hey, i put on 33's on my 1500 a while ago and love em, they got 3.55 gears, and the truck just doesnt seem to accelerate that well, cause of the weight of the tires. i feel like i need to change the gearing, its a 5 speed stick with a 318. Wonderin if swappin will really actually give me a bit more acceleration, i dont care about goin over like 65 cause its all backroads drivin, no highways.

4.10's or 4.56's?? and will a feel noticeable power and accerelation???

I'd go 4.56's and there should be a huge gain in acceleration. Puts a lot less strain on the whole drivetrain also. Mileage will probably improve some as well.

I'd say 4.10's would work for what you got, if you have any plan=s on going larger in the future then 4.56 would be a good investment.

its not the weight of the wheels... its the size... the size of the tire is the final gear ratio.... put that gear ratio together with 3.55 gears and youv'e essentially moved all your transmission gears and shift points down... just like driving a stick and shift way too soon each time and staying in too high a gear for too long when slowing down each time.

okay, well once these tires wear out, i am gonna put 35's, thats not for a while though, i dont want to do this twice. i just dont want to have it so that 1st is a little too low to always start out in, but 2nd is too high to start out in. as of right now i cant start out in 2nd gear (without riding the clutch for a good 5 secs which is just bad for it), so whichever gears will put me in a good place

see your not in as bad a shape with a stick since you have more control over shifting.... but 5th gear would be a lot more useful with better matched gearing

right now i am leaning towards 4.56, but will that really make it faster (acceleration)?

it will give you more power in each gear... I felt a huge difference in my stickshift jeep with new gears...better gas mileage too since it would hold 5th gear so much better with less downshifting... 35" tires with 4.56 gears will have the same power as stock setup with stock tires... right now your truck has lost power with current setup so.. its just like switching the front gear on a mountain bike... it makes it so much harder to pedal and you have less power going up hills because its too hard to pedal and accelerate... same thing here... the engine has to work harder to put power to the ground.

Given the cost associated with re-gearing.... and you want to eventually go to 35's, 4.56 is the only choice for you.
