Default Tranny won't shift out of first

Guys,

My '95 wont shift out of 1st gear. Brief history - lost the water pump and it probably got hot afterward (my wife had it). Replaced the pump and it starts and runs good...in 1st. Fluid level is good and it goes into 1st and reverse easily.

Secondarily, the water is not circulating, so will pull the thermostat as I suspect the overheat caused a thermo failure.

Thanks

Yours is all mechanical/hydraulic in the first three gears.... sounds like governor failure.

Are you talking about the Governor pressure switch? Is that on the body of the tranny? Any other switches/sensors I should replace while I am there?

Did it shift fine before you did the work?

It did prior to the water pump death. Following that, it would not shift. Kind of all happened at the same time.

Go back over the work you did and make sure the ground wires are right to start with. The ones on the power steering bracket for instance. Other than that, make sure you didn't kink one of the tranny cooling lines under the crank puuley..

His is a 95, so, there aren't any electronics playing a role until he actually gets to third gear. has to be a mechanical problem.

Only wires I had to mess with were the ones on the alternator, which crapped out while I was working on the water pump. I will check them again for tight. Sounds like I am going to end up changing the solenoid and sensor? I read the DIY threads on it and it seems relatively straight forward. Just want to make sure there is no other sensor or change I should make while I am in there, aside from the drain plug.

Your 95 DOES NOT HAVE a governor solenoid or sensor. You have an O/D solenoid, and TCC solenoid, neither of which come in to play until you have already made it to third gear.

Check and if your TV cable is binding, and has the throttle valve stuck open.

Instead of starting a new thread i thought i would just post in this one... Mine is a 97 1500... My dad has been driving it as i have a seperate car i use as a daily driver. He called me yesterday to tell me it wont shift gears. I get off of work and go drive it. I have reverse...drive..3..2..1.. and over drive works but never comes out of first gear. I dropped the pan and replaced the filter and followed the DIY for the solinoid cleaning probably 10,000 miles ago.. Common for these to just fail all of a sudden? what else should i replace or clean this time around when i drop the pan.. also is their a code reader i should buy for the transmission codes and does it plug into the OBD II port?
