Check the two wire temp sensor. Sounds like maybe it failed...... when that happens, the PCM thinks its REALLY cold out, and DUMPS gas......

Charge the battery fully, mash the gas pedal to the floor, hold it there, and crank the engine. See if it makes any different noises.

Two things have to happen with fuel pump. Turning key to ON you should hear it start to run for a few seconds. Can you hear it?

Second, it must build and hold 45 to 50 psi.

You check this by putting a fuel preeure gauge on the fitting on the drive side fule rail. Local auto parts store may have one you can use.

Testing injectors take special equipment that provides voltage over a set time and measure the amount of fuel passed in that time. Not easy without equip, but all of them failing at once short of crap in gas is unlikely.

well unplugging the injectors, and spraying starting fluid in the TB would have indicated this being an issue, right?

The starting fluid didn't do much. i got a little burp one time, but since then, nothing...

If the plugs are gas fouled, they may need to be replaced.... especially if they are champions.....

I BET IT ISN'T

My brother just went through this with his wife's PT Cruiser. It would start & stumble, then die or just plain not fire. I wouldn't rule it out.

Like GDstock said check that fuel pressure. If the PO ran out of gas that could and HAS killed fuel pumps time and time again. I agree with VWandDodge and GDstock on this one.

$150 to rent(borrow) - as in a deposit that you get back ? that would be ok,

but DO NOT SPEND $150 out of pocket to rent one. you can buy one for $32.

i don't think fuel pressure is your problem.
otherwise it would fire up (or try to) on starting fluid.
