Default fuel help

2001 dodge ram 1500 5.9L 4x4 sport. Had a volt drop on my way home about 3 mins after the truck started to skip and then died. It would still turn over and it would not start. I tryed jumping it and i put 5 gals of gas in thinking my gas gauge was wrong. My fuel rail is not showing gas at all so i tryed taking the fuel rely out and changing it still nothing. I could not or did not see a fuse for the fuel pump. can some one help me out. I turn the key it so wants to fire up but as soon as i let go its dies.

I would think the pump is fused. Check service manual for location. You already swapped realy with no success.....do you have access to a fuel pressure gauge? It should have 45 to 50 psi while cranking. Can you hear the pump running when you turn the key to on?

Has any work just been done on the truck?

The pump & I think the pressure regulator are in the same unit on top the tank in most Ram 1500's. If the battery is fully charged, and you know there is gas in it, try turning on the key but dont crank it over, wait 5 seconds then repeat 2 more times. This should cycle fuel all the way to the fuel rail after it has run out of gas, if that is indeed what happened. There is a chance it could be a clogged fuel filter, but I dont get the impression that is your issue. The fuel pump fuse is in the fuse box under the hood, not hidden at all. Remember there is a fuse box inside the truck AND under the hood. The fuel pump fuse is under the hood. If your pump is bad & you get a new one, make sure it is new & not a used unit & replace the fuel filter at the same time. My only advice there is do not buy a fuel pump of the airtex brand - I have never seen 1 of those last more than 10 months in anything. Carter & Denso are the 2 best brands I have found. There are tons of great sticky's on how to change the fuel pump & filter.

Also, use a volt meter to check voltage when it is not running, but also the voltage while you are cranking it. It should not drop below 10 volts. If it does, then you are simply not producing enough voltage to start it, or there is a large voltage draw preventing it from starting also. A bad fuel pump can cause a large voltage draw, but so can a bad ground or bad alternator.

Check the pressure...it is the only way to verify the pump and filter issue. Anything less is guessing...imho...

No fuel at the rail at all i don't need a psi gauge to tell me that. put my had on the top of the pump no sound of life. So I pulled my tank it turns out i had a small leak. i pulled the pump and it had a hole busted out both sides. it turns out it had a bullet in my tank. Would y'all trust a eBay pump. they running 80 bucks or auto zone is 221 ???????????????

Get a delphi, or denso pump. Any others, and you will be changing it again with the year.

Who shot your truck??

HeyYou is right about the brands of pumps, but I would add Carter to the trusted mix for my perspective. Simply avoid airtex - just god awful every time. You can find the good ones on ebay, my advice is to get the pump with sender unit assembly & change the fuel filter at the same time. The better brand ones on ebay or rockauto I have found are about $200. Please don't buy off-brand crap, you will regret it. Let us know how it goes.
