98 wheel hubs
I apologize if this has been covered previously. I did several searchs, however I could not find a definative answer to the following:
1998 Ram 4x4, front wheel bearing hubs: Can these hubs be REBUILT or is it the norm to replace the whole assy?
I went in to the front end to change u-joints and found the r/h hub is toasted. Minimal wobble on the hub when the tire is removed but with the tire installed the wobble is amplified due to the large diameter. I have access to a press and torch for heat if required and would like to think I can just replace the bearing rather than the whole assy. Trying to save a dollar or two where I can.
I have the factory maintenance maual and it does not describe rebuilding them, only replacement.
Thank you .

Thank you for your prompt reply.
I noticed the bearing in the assembly had the PN blottted out. It said PN Timken ##**## or something to that effect.
So just to confirm: the usual practice for mechanically capable individuals such as youself is to replace the whole assy? Perhaps thats why I can't find the overhaul of said assembly described anywhere?

Exactly.
If you have a place around that sells bearings for various purposes, you could probably match one up..... and it would more than likely be cheaper than a hub/bearing.... just depends on how available the parts are in your area, or, how long you are willing to wait for them. Its just a lot easier to grab the hub/bearing assembly from the parts store, and slap it on.

As soon as I saw your user name browsing the forum I knew I would get an answer that I could take to the bank. Thanks for the help you provide to so many of us HeyYou.
Checking for hub availablity as I type.

i'm going to add on to this thread.. i do not have a service manual on hand but what is the process of replacing a wheel hub? i have a 2000 ram 1500 4x4. do you need a puller or any special tools? or is it straight up? just pull the wheel, caliper and disk, then hub?

i have a torch and impact wrench and pry bar and breaker bar on hand. so for the hub you take that center bolt out in the front then the two 12 point bolts on the back then break it loose and it's free? for the most part
