Default My truck wont move in any gear! (stranded)

well my girl friend was driving my truck and i was following here in my mustang. all of a sudden she coasted to the side of the road,i go to see whats up and she says the she was pushing the gas pedal and the RPMs were just goin up. so i turned it off then turned it back on and the column shifter shifts thru all of the gears, but it will not move at all and any of them R, D, 2, or 1. i ended up pushing it into someones drive way and that is where it is sitting right now... i checked the fluid, and it looked fine. however it smelled burnt..

I am goin to have it towed to my house tomorrow.

Can anyone point me in a direction to take here? i read that it could just be a filter or something? i have had my tranny in my mustang out a few times, but it is a manual...i am a newb when it comes to these auto trannys. Hopefully this will not call for a new tranny as this is my DD and i am a lil strapped for cash right now.

prior to this everything had seemed fine! this just all happened out of no where!

the truck has 174k on it. it is 2001 dodge ram 1500 sport 4x4.

ANY SUGGESTIONS???

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if it smelled burned, it is burned. This means the frictions have burned up. If frictions are burned, it will be overhaul time.

Just to be sure, when you checked the fluid, did you check in Park or Neutral?

First thing when you get it home is to double check the linkage. Not likely, but good to check. These trannys usually start slipping pretty bad before they just give it up.

Drop the pan on trans and see waht is inside. There is a round donut magnet in the pan. The slimy goo on it is normal. If it has metal shavings on it - this is not normal and is not good.

Check and see, post photos as needed, and let us know what you find.

OK. Part of the problem - you check the fluid in these in neutral with transmission at operating temperature.

It is not normal for them to just die. They usually start slipping, and usually still have reverse when forward gears quit. In fact, the trans usually goes into limp mode and will not shift up. Your problem is not typical. Check fluid as indiacted and let us know.

Also, there is a free download service manual and a parts manual in the FAQ/DIY section. It will be helpful to you. There are also a number of transmission related threads as well.

I read something about if the sump is bad then there is not enough pressure and it will act like a manual does when the clutch is pressed..which is exactly how it is acting. hopefully that is the problem. i guess we will see tomorrow.

Don't know anything about a sump being bad...didn't see a sump when I tore mine down and rebuilt. Gotta watch what you hear or read from someone that may not have been in one before. Check out MonteC's Transmission thread stickied in the FAQ/DIY section. He knows these things, but hs isn't around much lately (dang it).

Check fluid level correcty before you open it up. Just for giggles and grins.

Will do, thanks again for your help.

And here Is a quote of what I read about the sump 'filter' :

"it sounds like the torque converter isnt getting any fluid, and with out fluid to the torque converter it basically acts like a manual when you push the clutch in. id pull down the transmission fluid pan and bam theres your sump filter right infront of you and go to your local napa and they should have the filter, i can almost garuntee thats the issue, if it was the return filter your system would just build pressure and more than likely either blow off a line or it would keep your converter locked and when you come to a stop after driving you would stall out cause the oil in the converter has no where to go."

Did you check the shifter linkage?
