Just don't be in the way.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if it smelled burned, it is burned. This means the frictions have burned up. If frictions are burned, it will be overhaul time.
Just to be sure, when you checked the fluid, did you check in Park or Neutral?
First thing when you get it home is to double check the linkage. Not likely, but good to check. These trannys usually start slipping pretty bad before they just give it up.
Drop the pan on trans and see waht is inside. There is a round donut magnet in the pan. The slimy goo on it is normal. If it has metal shavings on it - this is not normal and is not good.
Check and see, post photos as needed, and let us know what you find.

Less than a rebuild
OK. Part of the problem - you check the fluid in these in neutral with transmission at operating temperature.
It is not normal for them to just die. They usually start slipping, and usually still have reverse when forward gears quit. In fact, the trans usually goes into limp mode and will not shift up. Your problem is not typical. Check fluid as indiacted and let us know.
Also, there is a free download service manual and a parts manual in the FAQ/DIY section. It will be helpful to you. There are also a number of transmission related threads as well.
