I have a 96 and the dash doesn't have a single crack despite being parked outside everyday of its life. The key is to drown it in armor all twice a year. I mean spray it, let it soak in for a day or two, spray it and let that soak in. When it won't soak in anymore, your good to go. Never spray and wipe it off. Mine looks brand new.
Very widespread in the '02 3rd Gens, some '03s report it but comparatively few compared to '02s and 2nd Gens which makes me think they changed them sometime early in the '03 production year. I have yet to see an '04 or newer with a cracked dash unless it was a pretty well trashed truck...
I know the ashtrays and cup holders still break in the 04's!
my friend has two 3rd gen dodged. one is a 04 cummins 4x4 and the other a 04 4.7 2wd, both lifted and both of them are the cleanest trucks you'll ever see... both of them have broken cupholders and ashtrays.

I dont know about a 96s having the cracked dash issue and its not just armoral why does everyone think that? its a problem that dodge had with the dash cracking cause they made them cheap the 02 i looked at for sale did have cracks in the dash so the issue is still there withe the 3rd gen.I armol mine and it still cracked. whats another $100 for the correct material in the dash to make it right. Makes you wonder about their quality control from dodge read about it here at this link.http://www.carcomplaints.com/Dodge/R...ashboard.shtml

It was prevalent through 02, they had it mostly fixed in 03. I have seen newer trucks, not just Dodge, with cracked dashes though. Extreme southern heat and random crap being put on the dashes can crack them.
