Rebuilding engine, should I replace anything on tranny while open?
All,
I just bought a project 01 1500 4x4 with a 46RE tranny. I will be R&R'ing the engine this weekend and while I have the tranny accessible, should I do any R&R'ing? I know nothing about auto trannys but I know if it was a manual I would change out a clutch at this time.
In the 1 mile that I drove the truck, the tranny seemed to shift fine. Should I replace the TC? If I do that, any seals to R&R too? Any other recommendations? Brand names? Stay away froms?
Thanks in advance, anything helps,
Shawn
156k miles, don't know anything about the history of it...

There's the Sonnax Sure Cure Kit, http://www.sonnax.com/sure-cure which would be a good upgrade, there's a few member's that have done it themselves and would probably help walk through it a bit. Other then that maybe a band adjustment or fluid/filter change.
Is the 156K miles on the transmission? If so, is it the original or has it been rebuilt? Some people get by with their 46RE's without any problem's, most of us aren't so lucky.

i'd replace the torque converter. I've got a New Hampton RV type low stall as recommended by MonteC. It grabs and goes.
if you have any leaks around the front seal or other places, now's a good time to fix it. I think? not sure, you can replace the front seal w/o taking it apart.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll look into all. The sonnax sure cure, is that a kit that you install mostly from inside the pan?
dhvaughan, is that TQ the 5444LS?
And where is the governor solenoid located, whats BW? Sorry, Im a tranny noob.
Thanks,
Shawn

i'm not sure. watch out there is weighted and not-weighted...
and 318 vs 360, RE vs RH, lockup and no-lockup.
sonnax kit is a bunch of valve body mods, inside the pan. squirrels has a very good thread out there from the past with pics.
BW is Borg Warner.
governor pressure sensor and solenoid is in the pan, on the bottom of the valve body, very easy to get to, very easy and simple.

I admit my noobyness, but a fast learner indeed. All my history on wrenching has been manual tranny 4cyl rwd cars.
I do appreciate you guys explaining though, someday I'll be in your shoes.
