Default Drilling and gutting inside of CAT?

I have read places that to get more power you can just drill into your catalytic convertor and take all of the insides out to get more power and it will also be louder. I was wondering if this is a good idea, aside from the part that it is against emissions testing.

Why not just cut it out or take a piece behind it out and break up all the stuffing inside and pull the stuffing out? Take your 02 sensor out before doing this though! Drilling into it doesn't make sense as the extra gas released wouldn't amount to that much. BUT there isn't that much power to be gained here unless it is completely stopped up.

You can get a Magnaflow installed for around 200 or less at any reputable muffler shop and still be compliant with emissions testing. I would recommend that route. Check your plenum though. If you are experiencing a lack of power start here: https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...um-thread.html

Alright, thanks guys. I'm not really experiencing any power loss. The plenum was done in the past. I believe I have a magnaflow high performance Cat on there, along with magnaflow duals. I was wondering if taking all of the stuff out of the Cat will or will not improve performance and will it be alot louder because we all know we like that growl from the pipes.

back when I had my old 94 Z28 camaro, my cat got all plugged up from running 110 octane fuel while I was racing, and got so bad it lost power and could barely maintain freeway speeds...I took it off, took a crow bar and punched all the catalyst out of it, and put it back on. car was 2x as loud and obnoxious, and it regained its lost power...

I later went to a larger y-pipe and high flow cat setup on the car and didn't notice any performance difference. it got very slightly quieter (car already had straight pipe exhaust)

you can punch out the cat if you want and put it back on as long as you don't have any O2 sensors post cat in your rig... if there's a post cat o2 sensor, don't do it, it'll f-up your A/F ratio and make your ride run like shiz...

Personally I would cut the cat off and sell it to a recycling place (materials inside cat are worth lots of $$) and put a test pipe on there...

Yeah, cats go for 35 to 50 bucks..... Something the muffler shop will never tell you.

Replacing the cat with something that flows better (off road y-pipe, or high flow cat) will yield good results. If you already have a high flow cat, and it isn't plugged, no point in hollowing it out, as you won't see any performance gain. What you might gain from no restriction there, you will lose to the increased turbulence from the big empty space.
