The issues you describe are the same I experienced when my governor pressure soleniod sensor and soleniod stopped working.... usually drom the screen in the bottom of the soleniod plugging with metal shavings...I replaced them and it bought me 10,000 additional miles before the converter failed totally.

My tranny developed same symptoms around 170,000 miles. I am not a mechanic, but I asked a professional shop about just replacing or cleaning governor solenoid to save money. I went for the rebuild and am glad i did. My bands were fried and sensors and switches would've been a bandaid. 40,000 miles later and still works great. I agree with others you have said" rebuild time".

When mine had troubles I did the easy things: 1. Fluid change, 2. Check all connections. Then I took it to a shop and they read trans codes and replaced some solenoids. About 1/5 the cost of a rebuild, but I don't know how long the tranny will last.

Solenoid and sensor under $100 and about 30 mintutes and 6 qts fluid.

Default Fixed finally! Shifting issues 1998 Dodge ram 1500 Laramie 4x4 1996 transmission

The final thing to change so far was the harness on the transmission speed sensor. After driving in below zero and 4 wheeling in the snow the harness gave up. It was 50 bucks for the kit which is ridiculous if anyone has to change these parts there's kits that are way cheaper than the part stores. Governor pressure sensor solenoid and transducer kit. And a kit with the transmission speed sensor and harness for 16 dollars. Places wanted up to 90$ for both parts. So when doing this stuff helps a lot to ship around if ya can. Amazon has actually saved me a couple times. So I just disconnected my battery to do a reset for ****s and giggles. New rebuilt harness soldered to original wiring. Drove it a few miles with minor slips after temp install to see the difference I crawled into town from stops to get the part. So in about 3 hours I'm going to hook up turn the key wait thirty seconds start and drive. Let ya guys know what happens because after this I'm gonna be at a loss other than graveyard 😔.
