Default Transmission/Engine Issue?

1998 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2L 4WD 1/2 Ton Laramie Edition

I just baught the truck and it ran great for about 300-400 Miles.
Check engine light came on, autozone and advance auto parts read it as Camshaft Position sensor/pickup coil.
I replaced Pickup Coil/Distributor/Cap/Rotor/Oil Pressure Sensor(Broke Off)
(ABS & Break Light turned on, found out rear abs/speed sensor is common) replaced that as well turned off lights

But, shortly before that the truck was having issues with shifting?
Whats going on is, I'll take off and the truck with reach 3000 RPM's and will not shift unless i let off gas and ease back into it not just in 1st gear but all gears all the way up to overdrive.

The truck will do same thing in park/neutral. I tried to put in 4L & 4H and back into 2WD and still same thing going on.

I've got no check engine lights nothing on, and this problem started to occur before i did distributor/ whole 9 yards.
If anyone's got any imput it would be greatly appreciated!!!

I tried replacing TPS and i got no changes, so i just put old back on.

I've also been told that it might be a speed sensor on transmission that could cause this?

When's the last time fluid/filter was changed?? How many miles on the truck? Sounds like a governor pressure sensor/solenoid problem.....

Just did plugs/wires, plugs were gapped at 45 instead of 40 so reasonable amount without carbon build up, changed fuel pump/ fuel filter had bunch of black junk inside it when we pulled it out
fuel pressure was at 49psi the haynes manual said should be between 35-40psi
and stayed about the same/moving all over the place when we first started it

as for trans fluid/filter i'm not sure when it was last changed it'll probably be on check list in next week or so

49 PSI is correct for 96 and newer trucks.

So does the truck run ok, just shift funny?

If you need the governor solenoid and pressure switch, go HERE.

The truck purrs like a kitten, couldnt ask for anything better. Although playing with the distributer seems to be helping slightly, getting the RPM's up to about 3500/4500 to shift.

It did run slightly rough before i did all this work so its improved many things spark gap was .046 or .047th of an inch, instead of the .040 gap it should have been so a slight improve ment there.

and gdstock, what does the governor solenoid and pressure switch do? and where exactly is it located? Havent looked at haynes manual quite yet but if its located in there and explains the symptoms of them being bad i'll do em for the price of 100 dollars.

OK. This creates another problem. Since you moved the distributo, you need to take it to a shop and have the fuel sync reset to get it correct.

Haynes is no good for transmission on these other than....wel, no good for transmission issues. Go to the FAQ/DIY section and download the free service manual for your truck. It has a great transmission section, from diagnostics, adjusting to overhaul.

The solenoids are located on the bottom of the valve body. Remove trans pan, remove filter, and the solenoids are right there. Just a couple small bolts to remove. Also, now would be a good time to install a drain plug in the pan. When you reinstall the pan, do not overtighten the bolts. It will cause it to leak. Torque to 13 pounds. Also only use ATF+4 fluid, and check fluid level in Neutral, not in Park.
