Default How to tell if my flywheel is bad?

So yesterday my truck randomly died, and I called my grandfather to come help me, after messing around checking to see if it was anything stupid he started tapping on the starter, well after that the truck started but there was a noise that sounded like something banging on something. He suggested it could be the flywheel, but I was wondering how to diagnose this due to money being tight we can't afford to just throw parts at it until it starts running again

I would pull the starter and check the drive gear, it could be bouncing in and out on it's shaft.

If your auto has a flywheel, you have other problems

If someone mistakenly put a 5.9 flexplate on your 5.2, that would cause major problems. I would first try to see if it moves, by taking the inspection cover off and checking for play. I kind of doubt the flexplate is your problem however. You said it wouldn't start untill he tapped the starter? If the starter needed smacked around to start, it's on its way out...

+1 on pulling plate. It is on the front of tranny at the bottom. I think there are 4 bolts. Look at teeth on torque converter for signs of damage.

And +1 on pulling starter. Check the teeth on it as well. May want to open it up and see how it looks. The starter may be dragging or binding.

Does it make rude noises while cranking, or after it starts?

You are sure it's not something internal to the motor? spun bearing perhaps?
