I would like to upgrade the rear drum brakes on my 96 Ram 1500. I have read many posts on the subject, but could not find any that were difinitive for a 96.

Can someone say, or point me to a post, for the correct parts upgrade for a 96?

P.S. It has the RWAL, and the stock 9.25 corporate axle (not LSD)

 

I don't know about a 96 (mine is a 99) but I used the 1 ton GM rear wheel cylinder. Works well, improved rear brake performance. It is a larger diameter cylinder and allows fgor more pressure on brake actuation. And then get the best quality linings you can afford to get.

 

Those will work on the 94-99 trucks. I think they work on the 00-01 as well....

 

Any particular year model or part number and do you have to do any modifications?

 

Just get 'em for the same year truck that you have. No mods necessary, they bolt right in.

Well, that is quite a difference in rear braking! I have only done a quick test, but it seem like it takes care not to cause the rear wheels to skid. Now I know what another who did this mod meant by "relearning to brake".

This is a hot-rod modification, and not for everybody. I hope I get used to the braking. If not, I suppose the OEM rear cylinders can be put back in without to much of a deal.

I will say I am thinking this will work pretty good with a load. Thanks gdstock and heyyou - those GM 3500 cylinders are the same for the Dodge 3500. I purchased for a 1996 GM 3500.

 

Now it's time to go for the Light Duty 3/4 ton front calipers and pads.

 

I just went for an extended test. I gave it a spirited brake and it did not lock up in the rear. I think its good.
