Default infinity speaker replacement writeup!

yes it can be done and they do sound MUCH better!!

Here's my little write up.

I've got a 99 QC laramee with the infinity system, And I wanted to replace my chitty blown front speakers for some better upgradeable (I.E amp head unit ext..) component speakers. So i decided to purchase some "Image Dynamics" CX65CS their component 6.5" with 1" dome tweeters and crossovers for $160.00. I went with a 6.5 speaker because there are alot more choices with 6.5 component than 6x9. ON TO THA PICS!

What i found when i opened the box

So with a 6.5 speaker I needed to make some adapters to fit in the 6x9 hole..I could have just bought some ebay plastic ones for $14 bucks, but after reading that they might rattle n such i decided that wasnt a good idea!

So i made my own out of 3/4 particle board, bought a 2'x2' peice for $4 bucks gonna make it MDF maybe later on. they only had a 4x8 sheet for $40 bucks so yeah, and btw im no wood master lol

made an outline of the 6x9

then an outline of the inside ring of the 6.5

then i used a router with a cutting tip (not sure wtf tip i used) to cut the 6.5 hole first and test fit

drilled some pilot holes for all the screws then painted it with this..just a clear

then using the stock speaker screws i mounted the 6.5 speaker to the adapter, then used the 2" screws supplied i mounted the adapter in the door. All the stock wireing pluged in, and i just zip tied the amp out of the way

then slapped the door panel back on for fitment, only bulges slightly

yeah just so you guys know, The stock ones are pretty touchy and i broke mine getting it out. I'm not going to be able to mount the tweeters in the stock location (just to darn big) so im gonna have to figure out a different place.

lemme know what you think...

If you want the best get alpine. They ain't cheap though.

As far as the infinity system, just scrap it and run new wire, you will SAVE time by doin that instead of trying to jump through holes to get the factory system to work with new speakers and head unit.

i know but i dont have the coin to upgrade it all at once, and the blown speakers are going to annoy me to death hence the little bit of saved money for speakers lol, and its only going to be for the time being till i save up for a new head unit n such, then off comes the infinity and on comes the rewire with amps and dynamat lol

If you are really on a budget try you local Pawn shops, you will have to haggle with them but it will save you a good bit over retail. You could also keep your stock stereo (given it works) while you replace the speakers

yeah im going to be keeping the stock deck till later and just upgrading the speakers for now...just trying to find what components will fit in stock place...mostly just what tweeters will fit...

and if i buy component with the crossover n such if i can just leave the crossover out and use stock crossover/amp for now

im looking into some image dynamics right now, they seem to be on the better end of the scale but not as big a name such as alpine or polk audio..

trying to decide weather or not to go with 6x9s? or get an adapter made and go 6.5

theres not a whole lot of 6x9 components out there and there may be a reason why..just not sure

I love the scale on the side of the box. That's classic.

Image Dynamics are not a bad brand.. can be a little over priced for some of their stuff.. but over all decent.
