programmer help please
Thats about as cheap as they get. Least expensive Superchips is $350-ish. You can get a used one for slightly cheaper than a new SCT, about $225-$250. However, the SCT does do a slightly better job (some claim way better) with these trucks than Superchips. Sean (Hemifever) also is willing to work with you.
I used to have a 3815 Superchips tuner on my 2001 Ram. Updated it one time from their website, tuned again and... it ran like crap. It was missing, hesitating, shuttering. Once it entered closed loop operation after warm-up (about 5 minutes), it would run better, but would be terrible at WOT. Severe hesitation and pinging (pre-detonation). Contacted Superchips, they said it was the truck, not their tuner. So I spent a few hundred on various sensors and other common failure point parts. No change.
Finally another guy with a 2001 Ram had the exact same issue, about a month after I first reported it. Then a third a week later. Finally they took a look at it, and after another week or two, admitted it was a "compiler error" and that it would be fixed in the next update. They did, but I was so disgusted by it at this point that I sold it and got the SCT.
Not only was it a bit more power than the Superchips, but Sean can adjust the tune. If its to aggressive and you have pinging, he'll cut back the tune slightly, no fuss, no extra charge. He was great to work with.
Only reason I have a Superchips for my 2010 now is because SCT doesn't do Chrysler products newer than 2006, and Diablo has questionable reliability for gas trucks.

cheapest is a used Superchips or Hypertech from ebay or forum. The performance gain is modest, but its a nice cheap cure for death flash, with the added benefit of speedo correction.
DO NOT GET A JET CHIP. they cause pinging, no speedo correct, and their stack mount over the pcm is prone to coming loose.
superchips is the more useful of the 2, working on a wide range of dodge products and years from 98 and up. This makes it a little more expensive, but also better resell value if/when you want to sell it. Hypertech is the least useful, being limited to ONE specific year starting with 97. I've got both, the superchips works great, and the hypertech was ok performance wise, but the SOB never worked right to modify the speedo. I contacted hypertech several times with no success, so I don't like them and say buyer beware on the speedo correction feature. given that, don't pay much for a used hypertech. i wouldn't give over $50 for one.
start of rant on hypertech... in response to me bad mouthing them a few years ago, one of their reps contacted me through the forum. he was very nice. i was nice and told him my speedo experience. i answered every question. I gave him every VIN number, Part Number, Serial Number, Rev Number, etc. he worked on the problem off and on for some time and finally said that he was unable to determine why it didn't work.
if you do go the route of a used programmer, require the seller to send you a picture of the screen showing that its not VIN locked, and is available to use. Most people don't understand how they work, so again - buyer beware.

I have only used SCT on mine...and I love it. Wish I could offer a comparison, but not willing to spend the money just to experiment (too much work to do on truck).
Customer service at hemifevertuning.com is great. Sean will answer your questions and work to get the result you want.

So I have been doing a bunch of asking and thinking and research Will superchips or sct give me the best mpg? I have strong opinions on both sides of the fence but can not decide.

BTW, I have used both.
Get an SCT from Sean Powell (Hemifever) and drive smart.
