Default T-Case problems

So I was driving Sunday morning and my transfer case exploded into 2 pieces. I went and bought one from a guy and he said it should work. My original is a 96 NP231 the one I bought from him is a 95 NP231. I went to install it tonight and the input shaft that slides into the tranny is too long on the new one. Why is that? shouldnt they be the same?

is your new one from a dodge ram, or from something else? (like a jeep or something). i think a lot of different vehicles use a 231. look at the part number on the red/white metal tag attached to the case.

have you got them both laying there side by side?

mine looked like this

The guy told me it was from a 1995dodge dodge ram 1500. Yes I have them both lying next to each other. I will look at numbers when I get to my shop

I think there were differences in the input between manual, and automatic transmissions....

Either way, T-case dissembly is super easy. Pop it open and swap the inputs. Grab the Factory Service Manual from the DIY section, it has step by step instructions, pictures, and even some pop-up illustrations

ha, super easy it is! just pulled apart some of mine last night to replace seals. gonna get the t-case saver next.

im lucky my t-case didnt blow into tiny pieces. pulled the fill, and drain plugs today, and only about 2-3 table spoons of atf came out..... glad i checked it when i did!

there are slight differences in the auto, and manual transmissions. as far as differences for year, im unsure of any.... there should be enough room to put that t-case on without any issues, so it should still work.

good luck!
