Default a few steering questions&a picture...

ok so I had my truck in the shop getting some seals&gaskets replaced&the mechanic said I had some serious steering issues now me myself I don't notice nothing to bad.Just a little bit of play&it dosnt bother me much.I told him that I adjusted the gear box before&he said..not sure what you did but you can't adjust these. He then toldme I need a new gear box&I told him Ill pass.Well that being said I went&checked ball joints&everything else I could &it was all fine.I did find this...not sure what it is can't find much in the book on it.It is super loose.

That is supposed to go thru the adjustment sleeve to "hold" it in place in the event the bolts were loose. Don't really need it some trucks don't even have it anymore.

the best response to that is - "really? show me".
then say - what is that thing and how much will it cost to get it fixed. (and write it down).
then say - i don't have that kind of money right now. i'll bring it back next month after i get paid. ask-what's the worst that can happen if i wait one month?
then google it and think about it some and decide what to do.

if the mechanic won't show you what the serious problem is, just leave.

tightening up the steer box is not a service event that's on the maintenance schedule, nor one of those things that a mechanic will volunteer to do, since it takes all of 5 minutes. he'd much rather sell you a 2 hour steering box replacement job for about $400-500 than a $10 adjustment.

my father showed me that a long time ago. we bought about a 10 year old '60 ford pickup for $100. it was a worn out farm truck and i swear it had about a 1/4 turn of play in the steering wheel. it took every bit of concentration to drive that SOB and hold it in the road. Daddy just said, loosen that lock nut right there and tighten that screw up... holy cow. what a difference.

Considering that you did, in fact, adjust the box.... I am thinkin' he was being somewhat less than honest when he told you it wasn't adjustable. I would also point out, that the adjustment procedure is detailed in the factory service manual....

Are you getting any steering problems? If not, then don't put a stabilizer on. I've been running w/o one for 3 months now. No. I don't have any vibration or wobble.

If you want the dual setup that TGC has, then I'll sell you mine. There are some vibes that are not worth getting muted and the stabilizer will soak 'em up.

I'd first say you drive that thing for awhile as-is before deciding. Stock replacement from Napa is like $30ish.
