Glowshift sent me the new gauge and I hooked it up with the power off and the switch set to V8 and I still get idle around 1200 and the gauge isn't very responsive. Here's a question? I'm looking at the 96 service manual and the wiring diagrams show the two wires coming to the coil. Looking in my truck One is green with an orange stripe and the other is black with mud tinting . The second wire is the one I have the Tach connected to now. Here is the drawing.

For my sanity would anyone like to point out the negative side of the coil? The ProTach I had on the truck for the last 5 years worked perfectly. Is GlowShift just cheap chineese crap? I can't figure out why this thing could be getting the wrong signal.

Image didn't show.

You want the wire that goes to the PCM, from the coil. Other wire should have 12 volts with the key on, for about 3 seconds...... or while the engine is being cranked.

Sorry! I tested it with my meter and I have the correct wire from the coil. The gauge still reads 1200 at idle. If I get over what the gauge reads as 3K it drops back to zero. I have no idea what the problem is. I'm guessing GlowShift tachometers aren't a very good idea. I still have the transmission gauge to hook up. Lets hope this goes better than the tach.

That seems really strange.... You are tied in to the the black/grey wire, right? Where are you tapping it at?

Yes, black and gray. I'm tapped in about 3 inches from the plug that snaps into the bottom of the coil. I put the old Tach back on and it works fine. I believe there is something funky going on with GlowShifts Tach.

Well then, I think I would have a chat with glow shift..... Either that, or try taking the tach signal from closer to the PCM..... (avoiding the plug wires....) see what ya get.

The guy told me to try some nickel plated tape to keep the EMI out. I guess I can somewhat understand that. The wire isn't within 6-10 inches of any spark plug wires, but it does run right along side the wiring harness. I guess i'll try some HVAC tape. Its impossible to find nickel plated tape. I Wonder if aluminum foil would work? Que the Foil hat UFO guys!

Probably anything that would electrically isolate the wire from outside interference would be better than nothing at all. Just ground the foil somewhere..... Preferably to the body....
