Default Set Ignition Timing

1999 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9 Rebuilt. I need to get the fuel sync done to complete the timing but I wanted to wait until I cammed the truck and replaced the throttle body and injectors.

Where should the timing mark be set at on the pulley? I set it at 0 and it seems to be damn close, the plugs look good.

Can I rent this tool/scanner and do it myself or is this a job that only a shop can do?

Need a scanner than can read the fuel sync value. I think you need a pretty high zoot one for that kind of behavior.... any shop should be able to set it for you, should cost more than an hours labor to do it....

Of course, you can buy the Snap-On MT2500's off ebay for a hundred bucks or so, and having one can be DAMN handy.....

Procedure for setting base sync is in the service manual. Grab the 01 from the faq section here.

FWIW mine must be pretty close after I rebuilt my motor, I set it at #1 TDC compression and lined the rotor up with the mark on the cam sensor. Even though I'm not using the stock PCM, it has been proven by others with MS3X if it's not set to zero +-1, it will not rev past 3-4K as the sensor phasing is wrong and gets worse with RPM, mine revs fine.

I may have to take it to a shop to have it set to be safe for now. I wont be getting my cam for a few months...

In it's current state:
SLP Headers, Indy Race Heads, Kegger mod, Flowmaster 40 series Cat-bak, hollowed cat, Bee-Cool Radiator, Eagle Rotating Assy, Speed Pro Flat Top Pistons, Meling High Flow Oil Pump, Heads are decked to increase compression a tad more and ported to match the headers.

I did the same thing, my engine will rev just fine. It's just not getting the max burn it should. It could be because of the compression and not having the PCM flashed to match... No engine codes though, plugs look perfect, idle is great just loses a little at high RPM.

With a kegger and stock cam it's never going to have much top end.. Stock tune isn't helping.

Yeah that's what I was figuring too, wanted to do the cam with the rebuild but elected to wait to see how she ran first.

I may call Summit Monday and match the cam with the heads and see what they say about a tuner...
