If the gaskets are blown, cylinder pressure will more than likely escape into the cooling system. No such thing as an external leak..... might be leaking between cylinders though. (which a compression test would show..... two cylinders right next to each other being low is a good sign....)

HC test is a pretty good bet. I haven't seen a false positive with one yet.....
