Changing your fluid and filter is a great thing to do. Flushing the transmission (if your truck is high mileage) is what is not such a good idea.

Just curious, why would flushing be a bad idea?
You remove more fluid that way. Just dropping the pan allows you to change only about 75% of your fluid. Flush is closer to 100%

Thanks.

for a flush, if you just replace the fluid it should be fine. draw in fresh fluid from a bucket on the return line from the cooler and dump old stuff into another bucket. I'm not sure if they have any kind of power flush setup at the shop but swapping out all the fluid should not hurt or stir up anything...

Who ever told you that needs to be smacked![:@] Changing you fluid and filter is part of regular maintainance of a truck and is a VERY GOOD IDEA!

Most places that do transmission flushes (at least around here) do it with a compressed air system, or by forcing a cleaning solution through the transmission. Those two techniques tend to stir up shavings/flakes/etc. that have settled in different areas. Some of them make it out. Some of them get stuck other places. That's what can cause problems in a higher mileage transmission.

I've never heard of the bucket technique that you describe, but it sounds like that wouldn't cause too many problems.

In the old days, they used to fill gear boxes up with kerosene and run them around for a bit to clean everything out. I know we did that when we rebuilt our tractor last year. It took 9 gallons of kerosene to fill the transmission...and it looked real nasty when it came out. [:'(]

Just make sure you use the right fluid. Depends on the year of the truck. Don't forget to clean the ckeck valve in the lower cooler line.
