Default Random Squeaking near steering wheel?

I know this might be extremely difficult to diagnose as I have been looking for the culprit for 2 years now.

It's a slight squeak somewhere behind the steering wheel, as if someone was scratching a nail on a piece of metal or a loose squeaky bolt. But the weirdest thing is, it's always random. Sometimes it will be going over bumps, sometimes while turning, no relation to acceleration or deceleration. I can't for the life of me figure out where it's coming from. I tried to video it, but it's too quiet or high pitched to be heard on it.

I know it's a tough description, but I'm open to anything at all.

Thanks Again, if you need to know anything from me, feel free to ask.

sometimes it's just to weird and random for any conclusions, I guess. I had a high pitched sound from engine bay the other morning and thought it might be a small animal stuck in the air cleaner, it was going Eeeee,Eeeee,Eeeee,Eeeee for two minutes and then it was over. Any guesses?

There are bearings in the steering column, and also the clock-spring..... either or both could cause the squeak..... Your best bet is going to be digging into it, and seeing what you find, if anything.....

Is there an easy way to do that without futzing with the airbag?

Nope.

For the air bag, just disconnect the battery, wait five or ten minutes, and you should be ok.

Installing one of these could very well fix the problem. It did on my 98.
