Question Transmission Compatibility Question? 5.2/5.9 long/shortbed years?

So the day has finally come when my transmission has kicked the bucket. 233,333 miles on an original transmission; its been a good run but now Im starting a search for another to swap. I have a 1997 5.2 Auto with reg cab/shortbed. I believe my trans is a 46-RE. Now I know that I can use a trans from a 5.2/5.9 from 96+, as long as I get the appropriate torque converter. My question is what about long/ short beds? Is there a different tailshaft for either? What about ram vans? And am I alright compatibility wise all the way up to 2002? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Bed length won't matter, 2 vs. 4wd will though. You can use transmissions from 96-99, in 2000, (i think) pinouts on the connectors changed.... you can adapt a 2000 or 01 trans, but, its more cost...... I don't think T/C matters on the 96 and newer either.

If you are getting a used tranny, the gov solenoid , presure switch(transducer) and TCC/OD solenoid unit would be good things to replace anyway.

Thanks! That sounds about right, I was unsure because I had someone telling me the different bed sizes has different tailshaft sizes or something... I've contacted my local yard and they have on from a ram van, I should be alright with that too? Thanks

Just save yourself the headache and have you current one rebuilt. You looking at $200-400 for a used unknown condition transmission, then spending around $300 for for torque converter, various sensors and selonoids, and transmission fluid. Not to mention the time you will spend under that thing. I drove my truck with only 2nd gear to a shop and handed them $950 and picked it back up 6 hrs later with a rebuilt transmission.

I have a guy coming to see my parts truck, he's interested in the transmission. He owns a '95 Ram with a 318 2x4. My parts truck is a '99 360 4x4 with a previously rebuilt tranny. Are these compatible?

No, they are not. First obvious reason is that yours is 4x4, and secondly your '99 is RE, and the '95 is RH (wiring and PCM are different). That buyer is better off to just get the current trans rebuild, cheaper and less time consuming.
