I heard that could kill a man ;D

I know this is kinda going against what I said about not doing damage..but with the oil pan off, could I use something soft but not breakable to prevent the crank from rotating?? Has anyone tried this? Results? Thanks to everyone for all the advise!

i would not pry on the crank.

i also would not use the starter. its too violent. you might break something or get hurt.

the preferred way is to just hit the crank bolt with an air wrench. if you don't have that available, either pin the INSIDE portion of the harmonic balancer (as merc said), or better - the starter ring on the flywheel or flex plate thing. don't pry against an aluminum part or a machined surface. put the crowbar against a rough cast piece, or frame, or ground, or something solid.

A fat screwdriver in the ring gear on the flexplate braced against something works good too.

With the age & miles on the bolt/threads, wouldn't there be a strong chance for causing a stress crack in the plate?

Stick the end of the screwdriver in the teeth of the ring gear that the starter engages in.

Just out of curiosity, why not use the stop tool? damage the piston?
