Default I can't find a part on the ABS, please help.

Guys,

I have replaced most parts on this truck, some twice. So, I truly feel ashamed that I can not located the ABS Control Module. I know I need to jump pin 13 to ground to read the codes. But I can't find this thing.

I have read its below the cowling. Are we talking the cowling (windshield wiper plastic plate)? Thats what I call the cowling, but I don't see anything below it. Is it supposed to be on the firewall below the cowling, cause it aint there. Is it under the cowling as in do I have to remove the cowling?

Frustration, frustration, frustration.

Oh, by the way its a 96 Ram, 2 wheel drive w/ a 5-speed.

Thanks,
Jason

I never looked for it on my truck so I don't know the exact location. But I would assume its around the master cylinder/brake booster area?

This is what you're looking for:

The data link connector is the OBD2 port under/at the bottom of the knee panel on the drivers side.

From the 96 fsm; To retrieve a DTC place the ignition key in the. RUN position. Then momentarily ground pin 13 of the Data Link Connector. When the ground is removed the ABS and Brake Warning Lamp will begin to flash. The initial flash will be a long flash followed by one or more short flashes. The long flash indicates the beginning of the DTC number. The short flashes are a continuation of the DTC number. You must count the long flash and short flashes for an accurate trouble code number. When the DTC has been retrieved compare it to the Diagnostic Trouble Code Chart (Fig. 9).

Merc,

You are the man. Why can't they just say that. I have spent hours trying to find the Data Link Connector. I thought it was something specifically just for connecting to the broke controller.

Ok. I connected the pins and it had the following blinks. I thought it could only do one trouble code at a time.

I get one long blink followed by one short blink.
Then after a pause, I get 4 short blinks. The four short blinks keep repeating until I disconnect the battery and clear the codes.

I did it again and got the exact same codes. So is it two codes, a 2 and a 4? All help appreciated.

4 blinks should be a closed RWAL valve switch.

I believe the 1 short then 4 short blinks is a code 14, which would be ECM program check failure.
This way of checking ABS system has not been available since 97, and now I see why.. Its pretty vague...
Maybe someone with more experiance with these DTCs will chime in.

Master tech IIRC, I think those are 3rd gen codes.

The 2nd gens after 97 need a DRBII to read ABS.

Up to 97 Shorting pin 13 to ground would reveal a small collection of codes (about 15)

3rd gens can read ABS codes by key trick, and those numbers seem familiar.

This is what you're looking for:
on the first gen trucks they hid those things behind the glove box. i would guess the newer trucks would have a similar setup.
