Default Stacey David is the man

I don't know if anyone else here watches "Trucks!" on spike, but the host stacey david comes up with some cool stuff. Last weeks episode he spotlighed a company "freedom fuel america", who manufactures a system that turns old vegetable oil (typically used to make french fries) into clean diesel. all for about 70 cents a gallon. Just watching that made me want to trade in my 360 1500 for a cummins, just so i could buy the system and make the diesel! I was wondering if anyone here on the forum owns this system, or another like it.

Hey guys - long time reader, first time poster. I have enjoyed wasting time at work reading posts.

My brother owns a diesel VW and made his own fuel out of used fry oil - he was usually able to go around once a month to the local bowling alleys, fast food joints and any other place that had a fryer and they would give him their oil for free (a benefit for them since they have to pay to dispose of it othewise). Anyway he fabbed his own system similar to the one on TRUCKS! with a few buddies. Their were a few limitations though. From what I understand, it is very hard if not impossible to convert into fuel in cold weather. However, the main issue was the government, (of course). When the state got wind of their "manufacturing of fuel oil" they fined him and threatened further legal action. Turns out that some states have laws that prohibit the converting of oil into fuel. My first reaction was; Of course that makes sense - the state doesn't want ordinary people manufacturing volitile compounds without any sort of safety oversight. Not the case though. The state was pissed that they were out the tax revenue that he would have paid at the pump if he were buying his diesel. The fine was basically an estimate of the taxes he would have paid over the time that he was making his own fuel based on his average mileage - it ended up being more than $4,000! That was in Iowa - but I figure that other places might get their tax feathers ruffled also.

Default You've got to be kidding

While OCC makes some pretty cool bikes (with the help of many others), there is no comparison to what a show like "TRUCKS" has to offer. To say that they are "tied" in some way is ridiculous. They are not even in the same game, let alone tied. OCC (American Chopper) is strictly for entertainment only (Mikey is really fun to watch) and offers up very little real world knowledge (other than how to weld with no helmet). It's really a shame because I would love to see a show on Orange County Iron Works. I think they could really demonsrate some interesting stuff about metalworking and fabricating. Now the stuff that Stacey David shows on Trucks is always something the everyday gearhead can learn from. And it appears to me that the man knows quite a bit about quite a lot and does a good job of demonstrating it. It seems to me that these two shows are nothing alike at all.

Sorry if it seemed like I was bashing, just hate it when OCC does stuff like weld without helmets. Seems like Stacey has all the bases covered. Anyway, yea I saw that supercharger install. Man, was that awsome or what. Would love to bolt one on.

Oh hell yea. Stacey a cool dude. I always watch that show, and through I am gaining more and more knowledge on the mechanical aspect of trucks. I love that show cause it's informative for newbie gearheads, and Stacey is a funny dude. What ever happened to the other guy on the show?

where does it end--- one minute the state is upset that you are making your own fuel and they are out some revenue. What happens when you start making other things are they going to force you to buy it at a store? I am just so tired of government (aka big brother)

Yeah, tell me about it. They'll let you brew your own beer (thank god), yet you start dipping into their $.35/gallon tax and the suits in the state house and in D.C. get all grumpy. Must be nice to be able to get free haircuts, meals, vacations, and oh yeah, TRANSPORTATION. Representatives? They don't represent me.

I can't count the number of times I have said to myself;
"Self, don't spend "x" amount of $ on that piece of crap. You can make one twice as nice for half as much. Why shouldn't I be able to make my own fuel, 'taint hurtin' nobody but the tax collector.
