I noticed my tail stock was leaving trans fluid today. It's leaking put and running down on the rear drive shaft.

I was just wondering how easy those seals are to replace or would I be better off going to the junk yard for another one.

I have an 01 ram 1500 5.9 4x4.

 

Not to difficult to pull the tail housing off and take a look..its the matter of 3 or 4 bolts.. Id have to look at mine but its currently raining and i dont feel like crawling into the bed of the truck at the moment lol... i wouldnt start looking for a new case just yet though

 

is it leaking at the seal where the drive shaft slides in?
replace the rear seal of t-case.
get a good National brand seal from Advance or other.

mark drive shaft orientation to yoke and trans. (good practice).
remove drive shaft.
remove/replace seal.
reinstall.
refill tcase if low.

 

My friend was telling me that those seals are a pain to replace. He said that they are tampered and the only way to get them out is to cut them.

I'm not sure how much of that is true but it looks like I'll have to dig my manual out when I get off work.

Where is it leaking (as asked earlier)? At the place where driveshaft goes in, or at trans to transfer case?

 

tapered... And yes they go ni one way which should make it easier

 

its not too hard.

remove the old one with either a seal puller, large claw hammer, large screwdriver, or small pry bar. don't press on the output shaft of tcase. just catch the lip of the seal and pry it out. its ok to destroy it.

when installing new, you do have to be patient, and drive it in straight. you can use a block of 2x4, or just a hammer with a patient tap tap tap - back and forth, or round and round, your choice. once it gets started all the way around, just bang it in...

That video looks like what I need, too bad this didn't happen a few weeks ago when I replaced my drive shaft u joints.


What is the correct name for that seal?
