Hint: That's one of the reasons I always give for replacing the factory anti-drainback with a remote filter.

 

I know! Rebuilder IS paying for it. That's the worst part! But look at all the experience I am getting!

 

WITTRANS shipped the new bearings yesterday. They are on UPS truck out for sdelivery. Their customer service rocks!

So I am going to pull truck into garage at noon and drop OD unit. Should have it out before UPS gets here. May have it back in and running by end of day (so wife can park her car inside.....that's always important...)

I am replacing the overrunning clutch also just to be sure.

Would love to know if this fixes the problem. My 99 does the same thing, been doing it for a few months.

 

Making noise? Easy to figure if you jack it up and put in gear. My noise would come and go, but for once I got lucky and it was noisy right away when I crawled under it. Use stethoscope to make sure all other frive train compnents were not noisy, including rear end.


Not realizing I would be back into this tranny, I improvised the first time:




This time, I had a 3/8” thick piece of rolled stock cut for the top and a piece of ¼” rolled stock with a hole cut for the bottom, and ½” rod to weld between them for the tooling to compress OD unit and remove safely. Will decide on length of rod when I get OD out and on the press.




(Yes, I ruined the steering wheel puller....and tooling photo looks a little fuzzy.....Better pic when I get it welded up....)

Oulled the crossmember and loosened tailshaft from trans body.



Found this when I pulled the speed sensor.......Can;t identify yet, but either bearing cage of overrunning clutch pieces....Shavings on magnet and a chunk....

It gets worse.....the bearing spun in the case, and the overrunning clutch is in pieces....(but I suspected the OR clutch...hoped the bearing did not spin) so I need a new rear half of case.





I should have known this was not going to be a one day job......can't get parts in this town on a weekday, and as far as weekend....forget about it! (But at least I knew what to look for and how to do it....this time.....)

The heavy duty parts I put in before held up!
