Default Partial 4x4 engagement?? Clicking in front end when turning after long drive

Hi everyone,

The truck is doing amazing since buying it in May. I've successfully driven it from Ft Lauderdale to Charlotte with ZERO problems, and a nice, smooth drive since getting the tranny rebuilt, the new tires, and the alignment. I'm very impressed with it overall.

Tonight, I took the truck to Lexington, about an hour away. I noted that after a while driving on the highway, when I accelerated and turned, I heard a clicking coming from the front end. It happens when I do it turning left or right, but only after driving for a while. It almost feels like something in the front axle is partially engaged in 4x4, because it's a vibration feeling coming from both sides of the that front axle. When you park the truck and let it cool off, the truck does NOT do it until you drive for a while.

Anyone ever hear of anything like that? The truck engages and disengages 4wd flawlessly, but like I said, when you turn that wheel, you just hear a clicking coming from up front as the truck starts moving. Thanks alot! I may be putting the truck up for sale in a few weeks, as my clinical site is over 40 miles away each way. It just doesn't make a practical commuter truck. But, she's been a hell of a truck!!!

Why does it only do it when the truck has been driven for a while? If I jump in and drive it locally for about 20 or 30 minutes, it doesn't do it... only if I pop off the highway and start to make a turn, or simply slightly turn the wheel and move forward or backward?

I would think that if it were the U Joints, it would do it all the time.

I should have said it already, but check them for play...there shouldn't be any! They just might not be real bad yet. It should be most noticeable at low speed turns, but will make noise and vibes at higher speeds..cheap fix if it's the problem

check axle ujoints and front wheel bearings.

for axle ujoints, with truck not in 4wd, grab the inner axles and twist then back and forth against the front wheels. should be no play, no sound.

bearings. grab tire at 12 oclock with both hands and push/pull with all your might. should be no movement. movement could be bad bearings or ball joints.
