Default '96 ram - time to replace the heater core

My '96 has been sitting for about a year now after I got my '01 but it's time to run it for the winter or get it sold. I need to fix some brake lines, brake shoes, and replace the heater core. I'm cool doing the brakes but haven't replaced a heater core before. I'm told that I need to tear apart my whole dash to replace it. Is there any threads I should referance or a how-to out there? Any advise is appreciated.

I'll say a prayer for you. It's an abortion and a half. If mine goes out, I'm thinking of cutting through the firewall to get at it. A few rivets and tar should get it back together. I've seen Musclecar and Hot Rod TV shows.

It's a big job, for sure. I just did mine, along with a new dash... I'm feeling old and sore this morning.

Don't even think it. You don't want to deserve the result.

No kidding. He might as well go in from the front with a fireman's axe and plastique.

That is so true. I was absurdly demonstrating my contempt for the process.

I figured that, but wanted to future-proof the forum -- bigger'n anything, some putz would come along later and try it. Oh noes! My truck creaks, the doors don't close right, I can't keep a windshield in it, and all the hot air blows out behind the instrument panel so I freeze all winter!

If I ever come across a used HVAC box for cheap I'm going to see if I can hack it up to make it possible to remove the heater core by pulling it rearward, without taking the box away from the cowl. That'd be a cool mod to have. They really should have made the box clamshell longitudinally.
