Default '98 46re Cooler

Does the trans cooler also work as a heat exchanger in the winter?
Just to verify, there isnt supposed to be a thermostat that by passes it until the fluid temp hits operating temp is there?

The trans fluid is cooled via the external aka aux cooler or a internal cooler and also through the rad..

Hmm.. I'm trying to get away without routing the fluid through the radiator, any other way around it?

Thanks again Patt

You can connect the aux cooler to the lines and bypass the internal radiator cooler if you want. Don't know what benefit that would give you though.

If the rig's going to see cold weather, you don't really want to do it that way. When it's wicked cold the engine coolant dumps some heat off to the ATF in its chunk of the radiator, keeping things flowing more smoothly.

Absolutely dont delete it... all it takes is 32*F to get that tranny sluggish... Then 5 miles driving to warm it up fully at least...

It just sucks that the 4bt radiator I have was from a van with a manual so no where to run ATF through it....

Any ideas here? Think snugging the trans cooler to the backside of the huge radiator would help any?

Tough to tell, but the thing is huge.

I wonder if I wouldnt be better off running the 360 radiator w/ electric fans, with the 46re cooler....
They would bolt right back in and I would get my trans heat exchanger back

BUT I would lose cooling efficiency for both engine and trans....

It'd be an even worse option, dumping that much engine heat into the transmission. In the factory radiator the two circuits are essentially side by side, and the aux cooler (if you have a towing package) goes in front of the whole shebang on the downstream side.

You might want to make a junkyard run and scrounge the bits out of a factory diesel.

That fan will not cut it! You will have overheating issues.
