Really frustrated, need front axle help
I have a 96 1500. My ujoint went while on vacation in the middle of no where and took the yokes with it. So i picked up a shaft from a 99 1500. I can't get either shaft back in the carrier. I started with the 99 and couldn't get it, so I tried to get my old one back in and couldn't. I don't really want to take my front cover off if I don't half too, but will if I do. Any thoughts?

What carrier? I don't know if the shafts are interchangeable or not. Front yoke splines may be different since trannys are different.
94 to 01 do not use the same transmission. I guess providing more details on vehicle would take some of the guess work out of it....I have a 99 and don't know what you mean by carrier.....And splines looking the same - gotta count the splines to be sure.

When the axle is seated in place and you turn it you should hear and feel the spider gears turning (drivers side). Pass side you will not feel any resistance as the cad is not engaged. You have to get it past the inner seals gently, then it will slip into the side gear in the gear carrier (drivers side) or on the pass side it will go past the seal then into the cad collar and a tit will engage into the intermediate shaft. You can turn the axle to make it slip/engage into the spider gear or the cad collar.
Edit: As others have asked what side are you working on?
Edit: gds carrier= lsd or locker or open gear case for the diff's

all the 94-01 1500 front axles are the same.
on the passenger side, when you remove the old axle... unless 4wd is engaged, i think the cad collar will fall off, and then interfere with the reinstall.
you'll need to remove the cad cover on the back side of the axle housing. 4 small bolts that are prone to break.... soak them with PB blaster first. remove cad cover. small amount on gear oil will leak out. find collar. note orientation (chamfered edge to passenger side). reinstall axle very gently over the oil seal at the outside edge of cad opening. install collar. line up little bushing. insert all the way in. verify cad collar will slide back and forth over inner shaft. remove old cad gasket. reinstall cad cover with RTV as gasket. when installing CAD, make SURE SURE SURE shift fork aligns with collar.
drivers side should slide in with no malfunction.
DO be gentle over the seals. oil the ends of the axles and pretend the seals are made of glass.
