First: Welcome to DF!

Second: It's widely considered to be foolish to install a used transmission into one of these trucks. The 46R is not well suited to truck duty, even when the truck is used primarily as a commuter vehicle. The hot ticket is to install an upgraded 46R when the factory original unit lets go, and so avoid the problem of premature transmission failure for the remaining life of the vehicle.

I don't know what a used transmission might be worth. In my entirely too arrogant opinion, less than $200 -- it's just a case and some hard parts, a rebuildable core. What it might be worth to someone else, well... gotta wait for someone else to answer, I guess.

If you can get it for $500, that's a decent price. $575 is a bit high, but not too bad. Let's put this is context: I have 168k on my original 46RE-and I have worked my truck HARD pulling trailers way over limit and hauling building materials as I build my house. So, if that tranny has been maintained well and you keep it maintained, you should expect another 100k out of it. Now, you can get a built up 46RE for around $1500-$1800, but why, if these last for folks who simply maintain them?

Try for $500, then rebuild with 48RE parts to make it hold up better....OR.....rebuild yours with 48RE hard parts. Kit is about $300, hard parts another $200.

I am just waiting for your post "HELP!!! My tranny gave me 168K and isn't taking me anywhere anymore!"... I am surprised you got 168K out of it... It has to have had major work on it...

Uhh, you probably will want to keep the same year on your truck because the computer controls changed... If you go to a 1995 you won't have to worry about a computer shifting it, but I would advise against that...

1998 to 2001 are the same.....should be enough range there. But rebuilding yours is the best bet. Used one may run for a while, then put you right back where you are now.

Rebuild, upgrade frictions and hard parts.....just saying....
