Fuel in oil?
I just bought my 1999 dodge 2500 V10 and everything looks and runs good but i just pulled the dipstick and it smells like fuel. I herd it could be piston rings. how expensive will it get worst case scenario? or could it be a simple issue.
Could be simple... Start with simple things. Check your PCV valve, check the crankcase air filter (also known as breather, not all have it), and most importantly do a compression check. The compression check will tell you a lot about the condition of the engine. Post the readings from the cylinders here.
It's somewhat normal for that to happen. When the key is switched off the ignition is killed immediately, so any cylinder that was in either the intake or compression strokes has got fuel in it. That fuel runs past the rings into the crankcase while the engine sits.
Run the thing up to normal operating temperature and at least ten minutes more, then check it. If it doesn't smell like fuel any more, you're probably good to go.

the oil in my 81 smells like gas when you let it idle too much and not reach operating temperature. i think you should keep driving it and when you get around to it do an oil and filter change. the gas should not hurt anything. if anything it should help clean up your engine. i have run my engine with about 5Litres of oil and enough gas that i could hear the crank splashing.
