Default Binding in 4X4

Snows pretty bad this year and I find myself having to use the 4X4 on my truck.

It seems to work fine, but when I give the wheel about 3/4 to one full turn I start to feel binding in the driveline.. the truck kind of "Hops" or "Wobbles"...

I was told by a buddy that has the same truck that this is actually normal operation??? Sure doesent feel normal..It feels terrible.

Yes, the roads are very slick, I am not operating on bare pavement.

Any Input guys? Im just worried that this Binding is gonna wreck the 4X4 or that something is already broken.

when you turn the wheels are no longer tracking, which means the gear ratio's alter slightly- it's a geometry issue you can't avoid.. it's even more pronounced with a locker or limited slip, especially if the slip doesn't disengage properly (common with 9.25")..

what you're experiencing is normal.. just don't bind it when you have good traction..

Do you have a matched set of tires on it? My old Jeep Wagoneer would break a driveshaft if I had tires that were more than maybe a 1/2" difference in overall size. I even bought a used set of Wilderness offroad tires that had one new and 3 at about 50% tread, and that bound up the transfer case when turning.

It does scare the crap out of you the first time you do it.

But in my case I remembered not to lock the wheels in 4Hi, and it has been fine since.

How exactly does one not lock the wheels?
