Default 2000 ram wont shift (sometimes)

hi im new to the forum looking for a lil expert advice i just bought a new toy 2000 ram 1500 sport 5.9 i bought it with a bad transfercase (had hole in it) it had a check engine light on said output speed sensor checked it out found the one on transfer case is unpluged tried to find the wires to plug it back in but no luck not even anything that would tell me where the wires would of been all the other wires are there and intact just no luck i was wondering if maybe in the past somebody swaped in a diff tcase in the past but i still have that code im just confused and now the truck wont shift outa second sometimes. somedays shifts fine thru all gears n some times you only have first n second trans fluid is good n clean and topped of to the full mark did i buy a can of worms or what

What t-case is in there now? And is it leaking? Won't shift out of 1st or 2nd usually = throttle linkage misadjusted or sticking, gearshift linkage misadjusted, governor component electrical fault, front band needs adjusting or clutch or servo malfunction

thats a problem the tag is gone on transfercase along with part of the transfer case see pic i think i see a spped sensor on rear end if that helps anyone

What year truck did the new/used TC come out of? And is the ABS and Brake lights on?

Wow didn't realize that much was missing..was thinking like a chip off the side or something..that explains no fluid..wow..I'm running a 98' 1500 5.9 4x4 with a 231D and there's no sensor like in the pic. So yours should be (stock) 231D, 231HD unless for some odd reason you have a diesel<---doubt it Anyways you rig doesn't have an output speed sensor in the t-case (stock) your output speed sensor will be screwed into the outside of the trans..and other sensor location would be on the rear axle..the one in the trans might just need to be cleaned off or a new one is like $10..this should help with your jacked up t-case

so o replaced both sensors shifts awesome thru all gears I'm getting new t-case tomm I hope is there any preventive measures to help pro long trans life upgrades
things not to do etc I already removed chk ball outa line that I read on here to do and will b changing fluid next week even tho it looks good figured new filter couldn't hurt (are there any recommended filters fluid) thanks
