Default Confused between sensors

Long story short pulled build sheet to make sure the tranny in my 96 was the 46RE.

I bought the truck used and of course i believe the engine was swapped. Here lies the problem. Just picked up a 97 46RE both 2x4 which i was told was same transmission.

Problem is when i get the 2 side by side my old one has a round sensor on the tail end closet to the driveshaft that the 97 doesnt.

Looked up the trans numbers one is 064-1 the other is a 064-5. Other then the sensor they are identical minus the studs on the bellhousing. Is it possible someone swapped and older 42re with a used engine in?

So lost right now. Any help is much appreciated.

Did you check the identification #'s on left side just above the the oil pan gasket surface?

I have the 46RE as well but no sensor in the extension housing..but the output speed sensor is located in the overdrive gear case...
