but the switch does not control left and right lights separately. it has 1 headlight output and somewhere under the hood if splits to the 2 headlights. if you have a multi meter you could test the wiring. your left and right headlights have separate ground wires.

 

I'll put my meter on it tomorrow and see what it gives me. There are three wires a red (highbeams), violet/white (lowbeams), and black (ground). I'll have to double check the violet and black.

So what was it?

 

It was the friggen violet/white wire in part of the harness that was pretty much hidden under the frame. I should have looked a little closer instead of thinking the wiring was ok in that location. Should have known better.
