1998 Ram 2500 towing Capacity
I have 1998 2500 with 5.9 Gas Magnum Engine and automatic. It has 3.55 gears. I am looking at a 5th wheel camper with 11070 GVWR and Dry Weight of 6950 #. I am in Florida (mainly flat land), Can I pull this camper? Thanks for you help!!
Oh yeah it can handle that with ease... We towed 15000 lbs on our 1/2 ton Ram 5.9L automatic and it handled it easy (with the exception of knocking due to poor gas, but when that got fixed it had no trouble at all, even on the hills). Flat land will make it a synch for it. Just make sure to have electric trailer brakes or else you will have to stop like a semi.
Tow ratings versus actual capacities are two different things. They rate those trucks at hardly anything compared to what they really can do. According to the rating for this truck I couldn't even haul a 16 foot cattle trailer...
Troopers ticket based on ratings....
You can get a ticket for exceeding GVWR on any vehicle. State Troopers usually do this on Interstate Highways (at least in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona that I know of). I got stopped and given a warning for towing my Jag on a trailer rated for 12,000....behind my Tacoma, rated at well below the wieght of the trailer and the car. I know others that have used a 3/4 ton truck and pulled a travel trailer that should have been towed with a 1 ton. Some places may not be as particular.....just have to go by what is acceptable for the area...and safety.

DOT inspections and state troopers are one in the same. make sure if you go through a state that you know the law. like Nevada is 55mph maximum if towing a trailer. i have only trailer-ed in mn ia and wi. usually do just under speed limit if hauling a big load or do what keeps rpms down when car hauling with O/D off.
