Another interim replacement is replacing the 231. I'm not bombing on the doubler. My post is an inside comment b/t Merc and I from earlier this year. I'm still contemplating it.

You can also source the same 231 from Jeeps.

Additionally you can buy a Teralow 4:1 which replaces internals.

Good tip, yes the 231 was always sought after in the jeep world for its chain driven qualitys not that there were not stronger options available but you were always happy to have one.

Now with this 6,000 lb monster it seems to be a weak link so something will probably need to done.

As you said before though research, research, research....and then weigh that against what I can afford.

Just for the sake of udating this for others who may feel like they were in a similar situation here some other things ive discovered about my little problem...

...with the truck off and in neutral shifting into 4lo is easy however shifting into 4h while doable still feels harder than it should be and does not give one the same confident feeling that it has shifted....

The 4wd light does not come on....checking into this more now but believed the heavily corroded 4wd actuator was the culprit....did do the make shift test of pulling one vac line off while in 4wd to engage the front..put line back on...then pull opposite line to disengage and put back on...

I got no results with this but did order in a new actuator and actuator housing if for nothing else than because i couldnt stand the sight of this one....I'm going to check for vac in the lines and work this out further but as i said just updating.

The cad could be the problem.. Are you 100 percent sure it is not in the case?
