Question Headlight Auto-Off?

I searched and didn't see where this has been discussed before so here goes. More than a few times I've left my headlights on after parking. Sometimes I catch it before the battery drains too far to start the truck, and sometimes I don't.

I would like to install a relay(s) that would just turn the lights off if the ignition is switched off. Have any of you done this with your trucks? Seems like it would be cleanest to do it at the headlight switch (behind the panel) rather than have to put the individual lights on a relay. Any ideas or suggestions?

I've never heard of this being done before.

Pertinent question though, does your buzzer not work? If not, fix that. lol

It will **** you off and remind you to turn them off.

I'll be the jerk and ask why can't you just remember to turn the lights off? Or are we missing any details?

Usually the buzzer will let you know the lights are on.. Fix that and you will remember every time to turn them off... But as to your question I havent seen anything like that done before.

Buzzer works, intermittently. Probably a dirty contact or something, and you're right it would help to fix that issues, but I also think auto-off headlights would be a benefit. I can't think of a single time in my life where I've wanted the headlights on without having the engine running as well.

Try fixing the buzzer first. I'm not trying to be a killjoy, just trying to save you some of the trouble and hassle of doing something like this.

And as far as having the headlights on without the engine running, try putting up a fence at 7pm in the fall. lol It helps.

Obviously, the ideal is to remember to turn off the lights, but if a simple couple relays can prevent walking outside and finding a dead battery even one time then they're worth it.

If you spent an hour putting up the fence with the headlights on without the engine running then you probably were looking for a jumpstart afterwards.
