Default 2000 Ram Sport

My Ram has 180k miles on it. I was thinking of pulling the motor and trans to rebiuld them and beef them up. Reason is I want to haul my 06 Charger to the track. With the trailer and car I would be pulling around 6k pounds. Right now the 5.2 has just enough grunt in it for around town driving, add a trailer with a pallet of grass and she takes awhile to get rollin.

Is it worth it or should I just find a 3/4 ton with a Cummins?

If you have the money to go buy a Cummins do it... You wouldnt regret it.. If you want to keep the truck there is plenty you can do to your truck to keep you happy.... Gears, trans, and a little bit of motor work...

+1 dlyter

Gears, a fixed plenum, and an SCT will go a long way if you want to keep the gasser.

But isn't 6K pounds towing more than the 1500 is rated for? For that kind of weight, I would MUCH prefer a 3/4 ton.....

Maximum trailer weight rating is 7200lbs for the 4x4. 7600 for the 4x2.

A 2500 would work much better, yes, but the half ton can do it if need be.

Of course he has the money look at his sig

I agree with them all though. Unless you have an attachment to the lil' gasser just buy the right tool for the job. With engine/trans refreshment, towing gears and maybe some rear suspension additions the 1/2 ton will tow 6k without much complaint, but bigger is always better.

Ya I was thinking the Cummins power would be better. Plus a 3/4 ton would have the braking power for stopping.

my 2001 has the 5.2 has 186k on it right now, and it has plenty of grunt to pull a loaded car trailer.

trailer had a 97, and 98 jeep grand cherokees. at seperate times of course. i plow during the winter time too. have an 8' HD fisher plow. but if i had the money id buy a cummins too.
