v10 swap out

Question v10 swap out

I would like to swap out my v10 for a v8 is there any v8 that would be an easy fit its a 1999 dodge ram 2500

Why? Not like you are going to improve fuel economy all that much..... It would take years to pay off the investment in fuel savings. (if it ever happened at all...) Not to mention that you would miss the power of that V-10......

The trucks came from the factory with 360's in the 3/4 tons.... bear in mind, you would need the mounts, trans, and t-case as well, crossmember?, possibly driveshafts too.... not 100% on that... Then there is the PCM, wiring harness, and assorted other little details to make it work. Best bet would be to have a donor truck to grab parts from as you need them.

Yup, as HeyYou said the mileage on the V8's is pretty bad too, not much better over a V10.

And yes you could stick a 318 or 360 in that puppy, but again as HeyYou said you'll need lots of parts, this swap wouldn't be cheap.

Maybe the OP could elaborate more on what is the rationale for the swap. If it's for hauling/towing as a regular chore, then it may not be bad idea. Let's query the guy before unleashing the hounds.

I should think the 8.0 would be a better choice for towing/hauling.....

Agreed. If towing/hauling, the V10 is the way to go, not as fuel efficient as a diesel, but it works.

I could see thinking about a swap if it's just a pavement queen or daily driver, but unless you got a trashed truck to swap the parts from it would take forever to earn back any money in saved mileage.

Tcase wouldn't need to be changed. And if it's a stick truck, all it need is a transmission input shaft swap, no need to swap that either..





Stupid idea in my opinion. Swap in a Cummins.

That would be a better plan..... would actually be an upgrade.... and better fuel economy to boot.
